چکیده

Abstract The isotopic composition of seawater provides valuable information on how the Earth system has evolved. Here we present stable tungsten (δ186/184W) recorded in three ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts spanning past 80 million years Pacific. δ186/184W Fe-Mn displays a pronounced decrease ∼0.2‰ from 60 Ma to 40 followed by value ∼0‰ since ca. Ma. Multiple lines evidence indicate an invariable equilibrium fractionation between and seawater. consistent variations also limited alteration deposition regime or diagenetic overprinting. Thus, reflects mainly that A simple mass-balance calculation comparison other proxies suggest early Cenozoic was most likely caused decreased W sinks linked shifting sedimentation regimes. We propose increased burial organics oxide (FMO) may result smaller associated with limiting adsorption water column onto FMOs openocean sediments. Our results demonstrate potential as novel paleo-proxy for global biogeochemical cycling.

Rapid variability of seawater chemistry over the past 130 million years.

Fluid inclusion data suggest that the composition of major elements in seawater changes slowly over geological time scales. This view contrasts with high-resolution isotope data that imply more rapid fluctuations of seawater chemistry. We used a non-steady-state box model of the global sulfur cycle to show that the global δ(34)S record can be explained by variable marine sulfate concentrations ...

Evolution of carbon cycle over the past 100 million years

It is generally accepted that progressive cooling of global climate since the Late Cretaceous results from decreasing partial pressure of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2). However, details on how and why the carbon cycle evolved and how it would affect pCO2 have not been fully resolved. While the long-term decline of pCO2 might be caused by the decrease of volcanic degassing through the negative feedback...

Two modes of change in Southern Ocean productivity over the past million years.

Export of organic carbon from surface waters of the Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean decreased during the last ice age, coinciding with declining atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) concentrations, signaling reduced exchange of CO(2) between the ocean interior and the atmosphere. In contrast, in the Subantarctic Zone, export production increased into ice ages coinciding with rising dust flux...

Baseline intrinsic flammability of Earth's ecosystems estimated from paleoatmospheric oxygen over the past 350 million years.

Atmospheric oxygen (O(2)) is estimated to have varied greatly throughout Earth's history and has been capable of influencing wildfire activity wherever fuel and ignition sources were present. Fires consume huge quantities of biomass in all ecosystems and play an important role in biogeochemical cycles. This means that understanding the influence of O(2) on past fire activity has far-reaching co...
